McCloud's "Understanding Comics" piece left me with not only a better understanding of comics, but in all forms of media as a whole. McCloud likes to challenge many of our brain's natural instincts and get to the clear truth of what artists try to do to keep their reader's fully invested. With my interpretations of theme as challenging conventional wisdom for the most submerged look into comics, arguing that all of the quirks of comic book drawings have been such a compelling form of media that we become one with the comic in the reading experience.

While a story isn't effective purely because it uses techniques for a versatile protagonist to be placed in the shoes of the reader, the ins and outs of comic book writing give a lot of insight to helping your audience's minds in such a way they don't realize you're doing it. This means finding the proper balance of senses, concepts, realism, etc. It also touches on the power of the mind and its ability to not just correlate but create realistic personas from minimal shapes. Understanding this can help with knowing what attracts readers and what the mind does not have the time to subconsciously make sense of or care about.
