TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama department of English presented Pure Products Open Mic Night Thursday at 7 p.m. at Monarch Espresso Bar to allow all local creatives to showcase their writing.

Sarah Hughes and Wells Addington, both of whom are English professors, hosted the event. The show allows the first 10 people that sign up the opportunity to present any form of writing varying from poems to fictional stories and non-fiction essays.

Hughes began the night to present and promote an excerpt from her book “The Disappearing act”, which is a collection of poetry that released Tuesday.

“This is one of my favorite nights of the month because you never know what you’re going to get from our volunteer performers. It varies so much in genre”, said Hughes.

The performers are limited to five to seven minute performances, but if there is time left over in the allotted hour and a half time span, those in the audience can perform as well.

“It’s nice to have a place where you can meet likeminded people and showcase your hobbies in a town that never comes to mind when you think of creative arts”, said Alabama sophomore Sam Walker, a member of the Alabama Student Association for Poetry.

The event is free and is open to anyone. The event continues its plan to meet once a month as their next show will be April 19th at 7p.m. at Monarch Espresso Bar.
